Playing a Leading Role:

Promoting the Common Good through the Education to Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development.


This project is addressed to the schools (primary to high school) of the provinces of Rimini and Ravenna (Italy) and Cluj Napoca (Romania) and aims to offer a real ownership to the school world in the field of development issues and other priorities as expressed in the UN MDG. Not only will the project be directed to widen the students’ and teachers’ general awareness and education for development, but also it will promote and support their playing a leading role and taking the responsibility for actions and initiatives in the local community.
Growing changes to be faced in a globalized world are becoming faster and faster, but schools and people seem still less ready to understand them. Often the reaction to the challenges that involve everyday life is a “liquid fear”(as Zygmunt Bauman writes): nobody knows how to face such kind of problems. So many people seek comfort in individualism, in private life, in entertainment which becomes an end in itself, thus escaping from overwhelming fears. On the other side, promoting the global common good needs urgent attention, being no more an utopian aspiration, but rather a priority for this little planet. Human Rights, Migration, Peace, Environment, a decent work, fair trade, Hiv AIDS are issues that can be faced only with a general involvement and when perceived as everyone’s responsibility.
The project intends to involve non state agents - such as NGOs and voluntary associations, locally based –so that the schools can benefit from their expertise. Local NGOs and associations know the work “in the field” but may not be aware of the importance or able to establish long term relationships with both the educative institutions and the young people who grow, develop, and learn within their boundaries. With this project we aim to establish this connection between associations and schools and we propose to activate a training of the NGOs’ staff to improve their ability to involve others in their mission and action.

The project promotes and organizes educational twinnings between schools of different countries (not only Italy and Romania), activated on the internet. These educational twinnings will provide additional insights on other students’ experiences, a lot of information from reliable sources, opportunity to exchange ideas, views and schools’ projects while practicing lingua francas, as well as a smart, informed use of the technology, thus keeping this action deeply rooted in the daily, actual life of the subjects involved. The shared work between Romania and Italy is a good practice example in itself as it works with slightly different mentalities among two countries which were functioning not long time ago under the auspices of donor-recipient and now work on a partnership level.
The implementation of Resource Centres - in Rimini and Ravenna in Italy, and one in Cluj Napoca in Romania – will provide materials and multi media sources of information, documentation and practical examples about the issues in the MDGs.
